Getting the habitat for wild animals, is to promote biodiversity and food resources. To accelerate, the afforestation work on degraded forest land M.S Forest dept decided to implement the program through the involvement of NGO – Sandesh & Smita Gawande Foundation agreed to take up the initiative to start up with Food forest concept. For this we have decided the forest land in Umred Taluka in Chimnazari Beat, Compartment No 331, Near Umra – Tikhadi Village. Before starting these activities we have approached Forest to depart about to understand the procedure in detail. DCF Mr. Prabhu Nath Shukla makes us aware of the Plan of a tripartite agreement. Under this scheme, Forest officials allocated around 10-hectare lands in above mention beat. The same has been demarketed & making the boundary with barbed wire to protect the specific area from grazing domestic as well as wild animals. Our this year’s aim is to plant the 10,000 starter Plants. For these, we are searched in around forest nurseries to find out only fruit-bearing as well as noncommercial plants & finalized the natural local species from forest nurseries. We are buying these 10,000 fruit-bearing species as per their sanctioned subsidiaries rate.
Awareness to Local People: We Sandesh & Smita Gawande Foundation ensures that the people residing in or around the nearby forest area are taken into confidence and their active participation in the largest number is sought for implementing this project. For this, we have conducted the meeting with local people to motivate them for planting the new trees & do not cut the existing. We received the positive feedback from them in two ways ie they will get the wages for the same & their very closed attachment will be there since each tree is planted by themselves. They confidently will tell to others that they themselves have taken care & grown the trees/jungle. This will help both of us mutually about protection & ownership. This food forest is a flower and fruit-bearing jungle. This will bring back the bees, the insects the butterflies, the birds, the monkeys, the deer, and carnivores back to the jungle. The wood will be mostly useless to humans so there is no motivation to steal or graze their animals, instead, they will protect the jungle for the fruits, honey, and the flowers.
Plantation – For Plantation, we are using the special & proven technique While selecting these plants we have taken care of roots that should not be bend inside the tray/plastics. The root should be single root & straight. It is called a taproot system. For this, we have chosen the starter plant below 9 Months old. The hole must be made without damaging the capillary action of the soil. That means the size of the hole must be the exact size of the potted plant. To maintain this Capillary action we have chosen the equipment which is driven by Tractor. This is called Post Hole Digger. It is tractors PTO operated Instrument to dig the Pits. It is a faster method to dig the holes. Easier to use & can be used to a much greater depth. The advantage is that it can be made a much neater hole, with well define circumference. Removed soil & will be placed around the pit which becomes easy to fill the pit back after plantation. If gravel land is not allowed to rotate speedily and manually need to remove the sand & stone from pits. It has a special cutting tungsten teeth with the help of its teeth easy to dig them on rocky land. Put root growing enzymes during Planting, Cover the soil with hard to protect the soil from direct sun. Establish some watering system that feeds water near the plant and not directly at the root. If possible, establish an air-water condensing watering system. Most fruit and flower-bearing plants are edible by animals. They need protection for the first three years. Choose and contained area which can be fenced with the help of existing geographical nature, trees, and thorny bushes. If necessary, use the existing trees as posts and put barbed wire around it. Also, put the bonducella seed around boundary so that it makes as a barrier to grazing the animals.
